  18. <p>    Mary Fisher, who contracted the AIDS virus from her former
  19. husband and called for more action against the disease at the
  20. Republican Convention in August, has been named by President
  21. Bush to take Magic Johnson's place on the National Commission on
  22. AIDS. The daughter of Max Fisher, a top G.O.P. contributor, she
  23. recently founded the Family AIDS Network, a support group for
  24. families of AIDS patients. Said she: "We're all one family, and
  25. we want to have an end to this epidemic." But she conceded last
  26. week that little is likely to be done before the election.

  30. <p>    Long listed among the nation's worst polluters, the
  31. Pentagon and the Department of Energy are no longer free to
  32. ignore laws against hazardous waste pollution. The Federal
  33. Facility Compliance Act, signed by President Bush last week,
  34. permits state inspections of federal sites and authorizes heavy
  35. Environmental Protection Agency fines for violations. The new
  36. law comes after years of exposes accusing atomic-weapons plants
  37. of dumping dangerous, sometimes radioactive, by-products.
